History Removes the Illusion of Inevitability
A mature system can make its current shape look inevitable. History restores the missing choices.
There were usually other paths. Some were rejected for good reasons. Some were blocked by cost, timing, power, or missing technology. Others were simply not seen.
This matters because inevitability discourages questions. If the present is the only natural outcome, changing it feels unrealistic. If the present is the result of conditions and decisions, we can ask which conditions still exist.
History does not tell us to reverse every old choice. It gives us a more honest picture of how the choice formed. That picture makes respect and criticism possible at the same time.
